Dogs, Fines and Security Guards

Glebe Tram Sheds Update:

If the Glebe site has been a favourite of yours in the past, please be warned that the location has changed.

Firstly the good news – the Heritage listed site has been cleaned up by a working party and finally something is being done to preserve what’s left of these once beautiful and functioning historic trams.

The bad news is that the site, popular with photographers for its ever changing urban landscape of graffiti, natural vegetation, weathered historical structures and decay is now inaccessible.

My understanding is that new security measures include barricading the main doors, improved wire fencing, security guards and dogs. In recent accounts by photographers, one guard claimed to have surveillance footage of his offenders, another insisted that photos taken had to be deleted from their cameras.

Though I am not sure for certain of surveillance cameras and I doubt that it is legal to insist on deletion of photos, I do know that hefty $350 fines per person are being given to anyone caught trespassing. This of course has always been the case and part of the excitement of “visiting” the abandoned sheds.

However it has also been widely acknowledged that previously a blind eye was turned to the many photographers who crept in with their camera gear to document the area. This is no longer the case with the new owners and you will be fined if caught.

Mirvac are the new owners of the development on the adjoining Harold Park Paceway site are also overseeing the Heritage listed Tram Sheds. If anyone wants to seek official approval to gain access to the site for a shoot, contact numbers can be found here: Mirvac and here: Harold Park Development

For some of the gory stories from those who have been caught you can check the Photographer’s Guide to locations web site. Unfortunately like our beloved sheds, this website will be discontinued in its current form in May 2012, so check out this valuable resource before it also becomes unavailable.

well if they protect the sheds for heritage and not demolition thats a plus, my understanding those trams were in mint condition when they were originally placed there and now am surprised if they can be saved due to vandalism

  • You are correct Philip they were in mint condition when originally stored there. I know that in just one year of returning to photograph the trams the damage to the trams was heartbreaking. Not just from the vandals that ripped them to shreds but the weather that came in through the broken glass roof ! My understanding from following the FB group is that sadly now only one of the remaining trams can be salvaged.

That’s a real shame Sooz, :( I’m glad I got to have a little glimpse (thanks to you) before they decided to get heavy with people, Though it is good that the place is now heritage listed. Thanks for posting this :)

  • No probs Matt. Hope you had a great New Year :-) Sooz
