Between takes
This photo of my son aged 15 is my favourite image in my portfolio and one of three published in a popular kids magazine for an article about his filmmaking.
How I created this shot …
Location ...Sydney NSW. I chose to shoot in front of the graffiti wall used in the making of his short Tropfest film because I thought it would appeal to the young audience of the magazine. What I love about this wall is that it is always changing. The week prior it was a blaze of vivid reds.
Lighting .. Even though we did have lights available from the film shoot, I chose not to use them because it was an overcast day and I remembered reading somewhere that colours are more vibrant on cloudy days. I also wanted to be able to run if it started to rain.
Framing ... I wanted the photo to tell a story and for it to be obvious that he was the one who used the camera not just someone who was posing next to it. So I asked him to wear his trademark hat that attracted all this attention in the first place and to put the audio headphones around his neck.
Camera ... I am embarrassed to say that my published photo was taken using a Cannon Digital IXUS 75. Portrait setting. Point and shoot. Fill in flash I think judging by the light on his hand.
I didn’t do any post production. No cropping or manipulation. Just sent it off as is.
I was surprised that so many shots were chosen to be published and thus began my interest in photography. I now have a Canon 40D and look forward to improving my skills as a photographer.

Very vibrant shot. He looks really sharp and excited about what he’s doing. I wish I was that cool at that age. Great!

you’ve nailed it and put thought into what you wanted… excellent! the shadow cast over his eyes by the hat also ads to a sense of ‘i mean business’

Great shot and there is nothing wrong with the camera, i use one at work, it is great for keeping in my pocket and does amazing macro shots in a hurry on fungi and the odd slow moving bugs LOL
