Antique Cyrano

In Venezia (Venice) we were most keen to explore the art of creating maschere (masks). So we bought books, took photos and explored many mask shops, talking to master craftsmen as they worked. Though a handful of shops actually made their own masks from clay sculpture, through to plaster mold, then paper mache, many of the shops simply hand painted and decorated pre made blank masks. We spent three hours at the post office, posting those blank masks back to Australia.

This is another sneak peek at some of the masks I painted and will be exhibiting throughout September and October 2008. It is a joint exhibition titled Carnevale and celebrates the time we spent in Venice.

This work is painted in glossy black and rich gold, features plaster embellishments, antiquing and crackle mediums.

Original work now SOLD (To a very handsome young man who will wear it with a gorgeous tux to a masquerade ball.)
