Laying on my back in the warm sand with my arms behind my head.
and my eyes closed l listen to the sound of the waves crash to shore
The taste of salt upon my lips
A memory plays across my mind
The same beach but a few nights ago
New years eve
l smile as l remember how nervous l was when l asked you to spend
new years eve with me
l mean we have known each other for a while but only as friends
If l wasn’t with some one you were
It was a while ago that l relaised that my feelings towards you
had changed and that l wanted to be more than just a friend to you
So l watched and waited, being there for you when you needed a friend
I think it hurt me as much as it did you when you got your heart broken
Over time l started to do little things
like buy you flowers when you were sick, fix things that needed to be fixed
l even did your gardening from time to time
l would use any excuse l could find just to be with you
Then we were talking the other day and you said that you
had no plains for new years this year so l took a chance and asked
you to spend it with me
l bet my whole face lit up when you said yes you would like that

So new years eve finaly got here and once again l was nevous
l ended up running late because my car decide it was not going
to start " You have got to be kidding me" l yelled “You pick tonight
of all night’s not to start.That’s it” l scearmed “If you don’t start for me this
time im taking you to the wrecker’s tomorrow go it”
And yer you guessed it it didn’t work
l was just about to call you when my car decided to work again
All the way over to your place l praised my car like it was a child
telling it that it was a good car and stuff like that
Good thing no one was around to see me they would have thought
l had lost my mind

When l got to your place l was almost an hour late
In my haste to get to the front door
l left the flowers l had picked for you in the car
l was still swearing under my breath at my self
when you opened the door
One look at you and my breath caught
you simply just took my breath away
l have never seen you look so amazing
after a few seconds of silence l knew l should say something
so l just blurted out “Wow you look so good, I mean you always look good,
l mean you would look good with nothing on”
Blushing so badly l mumbled “l think l will go find a hole to crawl into now”
You just laughed at me and gave me your most dazzling smile
When we got to the car l opened the door and grabbed the flowers
that were laying on the seat and gave them to you
You looked at me and sighed “Carnations my favourite”
“l know” l reply softly .

When we got to the beach l gave you a few things to carry while l took
the rest
You walked down to the waters edge while l set up our little picnic area
Which was made up of a blanket on the sand, a portable cd play, candles in
glass jars (so the wind wouldn’t blow them out) a number of food containers, a bottle
of pink champange, glasses and forks.
When l had finished setting up l called you over
as we started to eat l pushed play on the cd player
“That’s my favrourite band” you laughed
l had to stop myself from saying “l know”
l just smiled at you instead

Ater we had finished eating l looked at the time
still half an hour to go, so l asked if you would like to take a short walk
with me , you nodded.
l got to my feet and held my hand out to you
Ater we had walked for a while we made our way
back to the blanket
l turned the cd off and put on the radio for the
countdown to bring in the new year
l got the bottle of pink champange and gave you the
two glasses and as the countdown began l started to undo
the cork and as the countdown hits zero l popped the cork
l poured both of us a glass and as we clicked our glasses
we both yelled “Happy new year”

After we had finished our drinks you looked at me and said
“Thank You for being such a good friend to me this year.
Im so lucky that l have a friend like you in my life”
l didn’t hear what else you said after that
A pain shot thourgh my heart and the words " A friend"
kept replaying in my mind
“Are you listening to me” you asked
“Huh” l replyed slowly coming back from my thoughts
“Are you alright” you asked with a worried look on your face
“Yer im fine” l mumbled
l got up off the blaket and made by way down to the waters edge
After a few moments you join me

“What’s wrong, and please don’t say nothing, l know you better
than that”
l took a deep breath and told you “l can’t be your friend anymore”
“What” you yelled “Why the hell not”
“Because im in love with you” l sighed
“Yer l know that and im in love with you too but l still don’t
understand why we can’t be friends anymore, oh hang on
yer l get it now, your right we can’t just be friends because
we are so much more than that”
l must of had the most dumbfounded look on my face
because you took one look at my face and burst out laughing

After a few minutes, when your laughter had died down
you came up to me and took my face in your hands,
looked me in the eyes and said " l love you too"
So many feelings shot through me all at the same time
l wasn’t quite sure of what to do or say so l just stood there
looking back into your eyes
Then l wrapped my arms around you and pulled you close
We stayed like that for a while

l started to hum a song and as l did
l started to slowly sway to the tune
that l was hearing in my head
you followed my lead and began
to sway in time with me
You rested your head on my shoulder
and closed your eyes
l kissed your forehead
you opened your eyes and moved your head towards mine
my heart was beating so fast and my lips were trembling slightly
as l met your mouth with my own for our first kiss
