the story of blind harry

the blind spot in the memory
a radical preacher in a violent age
promisng heaven but delivering hell
blind harry listens to the morning chronicles
taking uncanny risks relying on fortune
trembling in the dark reading from the ragmans rolls
across moonlit stones through the ivy in the garden
recurring in a dream the last drops of summer
catbells could be heard as revolt was in the air

now blind harry wasn`t actually blind at all
it was not an exact science but in this land
it paid to keep your eyes closed and mouth shut
a secret recipe of public executions and show trials
were still the order of the day for all the passers by
years spent polishing the silver without a hope in hell
ascending and descending the bitter taste of others bread
harry`s mindset accepted knowledge was now anonymous

the name of the rose spoken but lost in the land of love
a mysterious flame left in a plague cemetery of broken promises
next to nothing was it the speaking bird or the singing apple
told that the daughter of the forest had been burned at the stake
now heartbroken no day for harry ever dawned without loss or guilt
a lovers gift in a beguiled haze fortune turns, changes direction,
unknowable depths now took hold his destiny without reconciliation
he had forgotten how and why when or where and where was when

the prioress suspicious of relics put him in a slightly darker mood
thanks for betrayed bread was the face of pressure put on harry`s head
looking for signs of grace blessed sacrament of grape and bread
one remains hungry the other gets drunk on divine icon celebrations
the fox and the crow careful and reckless that neither one would know
eternally attracted woeful in distress like cloud shadows hit by love
harry locks away what still remains a tender sin of memory so sublime
the confessional table spins the wheel again dispersed by the tide of time

This is incredibly good Charlie. Fairy tales always have a sinister undertone which I find very interesting in a psychological sense.

  • yes i agree john most faery stories evolved from the oral traditions
from a time when wild animals were alot more of a potent force
    than they are now
,also the forces within nature were not scientifically understood
so mythological ceations would be invented to explain whats was then
unexplainable,….darker less safer times to live maybe

as for blind harry he did actually exist,he was responsible for embellishing the myth of william wallace[ braveheart]
but not much is known of either of them really ,so he seemed an ideal figure to use ,for poetic journey into the medieval for me
