just pushing harder on the envelope of my new Calligraphic Expression Series. Starting to get in the swing of things it feels like. The brush stroke is becoming the visual language I’ve been looking for all these years allowing me to find realms I haven’t been able to get to before. I’m feeling a connection with the sumi art of the orient in the expressive capacity of the brush – a westernized modern art sumi. Pure unadulterated straight from the neural networks emotive aesthetics. The synapse fires and the hand/brush loads the color felt, another firing of the nerves in the brain and the hand/brush strokes a color mark, fires again, stroke again … the same immediacy finds the place for the stroke as finds the color and directs the hand/brush motion. I’m finding I get “there” easier now and though I’m striving for stream of consciousness unblocked by frontal cortex activity the so-called “right brain” is either calling on the left to be the working monkey so the right can do the driving or the part of me that discriminates is finding a way to get back in the game on the fly and make effect. It is as if trying to block the frontal cortex activity to get at more of my mentation has created a “frontal” claim to be a part of the “whole me-ness”. I can feel that all my years of using the brush for signs, portraits, landscapes, & wash drawings are being used/called on and giving voice to the brush …. the thousands of drawings done to achieve a loose, accurate drawing skill are finding expresson as well.
