Eastpoint At Dawn
Eastpoint, Florida, USA, is the real deal. Fishing is the town’s lifeblood, though it’s getting hard to make a living that way. They take these boats out onto Apalachee Bay almost every day, using long tongs to pluck the oysters off the bottom. Local restaurants and markets sell the oysters fresh. This was taken early on a Sunday morning. The boats are still in twilight as the first rays of the sun start breaking into the sky. Other than the shimmering of the water, a lone seagull provides the only action.

The composition is faultless. They say that you shouldn’t have a horizon halfway up (or down) a picture but this breaks that rule with panache! The bird is in just the right spot and the colours in the sky and the water are breathtakingly beautiful.
Charlie Sawyer replied
Thanks!!! A belated reply to your thoughtful comment. I know what you mean about the horizon, but I had to include the refected sky.

Beautiful work Charlie…lol…I take it the fishing problem is due to not being able to fish whilst drunk. Love your description! :-)
Charlie Sawyer replied
Thanks! That’s the joke, but they are really good, hard-working folks facing a changing world. They are not gone yet though!

What a dramatic sky line. Incredible cloud formation and great capture with the lighting just perfect. As i scrolled down the page a bit I masked the bottom couple of inches of sea and I think it made the image even more dramatic. It drew attention to the clouds even more. I’d love to know what you think about a crop across the bottom, just below the longest post? Fabulous image even without my input (which you clearly don’t need with your talent!) :-))
Charlie Sawyer replied
Thanks, Karen. I did try cropping it closer at the bottom. The rule of thirds would suggest that it should work better than a horizon halfway up, and the crop does result in a nice photo, but it is somehow less powerful. I think what it is, in this case, is that the longer foreground makes you feel more present at the scene – like you are there watching. Thanks for you thoughts! Charlie

Thank you, Anthony. Getting the exposure balance between the sky and the boats was a challenge.
