Pharoah Sanders is one of my favorite musical masters. His spirituality moves in the same circles of the universe where I too travel. So many cannot tolerate the music of the avant garde.
According to reference sources: “Avant-garde (French) means “advance guard” or “vanguard”. The adjective form is used in English, to refer to people or works that are experimental or innovative, particularly with respect to art, culture, and politics. Avant-garde represents a pushing of the boundaries of what is accepted as the norm or the status quo, primarily in the cultural realm.
The vanguard, a small troop of highly skilled soldiers, explores the terrain ahead of a large advancing army and plots a course for the army to follow. This concept is applied to the small collectives of intellectuals and artists as they open pathways through new cultural or political terrain for society to follow.
Pharoah’s music exemplies his autobiograhical journey on this dimension, it codifies in music the turbulance of those exploited and oppressed in all societies on the false notion of race and gender superiority. Pharoah’s voice is strong, its sweet, its spiritual, its deeply uncompromising….Pharoah’s music is as real as real can get….
