The following is a poem I wrote in 1986:
BEHOLD THE FLIGHT OF THE EAGLE
Behold the flight of the eagle, the mighty outstretched wings to see,
As it soars above to flights unknown, far beyond captivity.
The strength in flight, the keeness of sight,
Though storm-laden skies or darkness of night
The courage and power, no enemy it fears
For great strength and wisdom comes with years
The nest is built high in the inaccessible rocks and rills
So no thief can destroy, no thief can steal.
It rerobes in new garments, fresh feathers for flight
Each year as it casts off the old rags of life.
When the old tempter serpent gets in its way
The mighty claws strike out as the predator becomes the prey
Behold the flight of the Eagle as it mounts to the sky
Its wings lift in praise to the One on High
As it rises far above the mountains to altitudes sublime
Oh Father Look, I give You praise and thanks!
For those eagle wings are mine.
Eagles live as long as 100 years in captivity, even longer in freedom. Also every year they cast off their old feathers and receive new ones. An eagle seeks its mate and they play courting games that can go on for days. These games consist of tag and stick diving. When the female deems the male worthy, they fly to between 10,000-15,000 feet. There they interlock their taloned feet and begin rolling head over heels while screeching a joyous love song to each other. Eagles mate for life. They build nests high in rocks and crags, and they are good parents.
They are mentioned all through the Bible. Man has Eagle names everywhere.
They are known as king of the birds, known for keen vision, strength in flight. They are regarded as a symbol of courage and power due to the altitudes at which they fly. Some common genuses are called serpent eagles because they feed on reptiles. Eagles are not carrion eaters, they eat fresh meat.
The way eagles raise and teach their young, how they take care of other sick eagles is facinating. And how they relate to the Christian Life is worth taking time to read. I have a few books, but my Fav is: THE EAGLE CHRISTIAN by Kenneth Price.
Here are a few Bible scriptures:
Ezekiel 1:10 NIV
Their faces looked like this: Each of the four had the face of a human being, and on the right side each had the face of a lion, and on the left the face of an ox; each also had the face of an eagle.
Exodus 19:4 NIV
‘You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.
Also look up more for yourself, there are a lot: Job 39:27-29, Psalms 91:2-10
