Original Painting, Acrylic on Canvas. (24″×36″)

I wanted Darkened Sun to feel moody and pack a visual punch through a contrasting color palette. I created a wild feeling in this piece to give the flowers a perceived motion and I think my love for clay-animation bleeds through a bit too. I wanted the flowers to feel like they just might dance right off the canvas! The vibe in this piece is meant to be rich and energetic! The interesting visual aspect of this piece is that I designed it to literally change depending on the environment it’s in. In an unlit room the rough textured vase seams to fade away into the background yet the sunflowers still seam to reverberate life. When Darkened Sun is fully engulfed in light, the aqua green hues and detailed brushwork pop out of the canvas exposing hidden designs all over the canvas. I wanted to entice my viewers through textures and heavy palate knife work and then contrast the heavy texture with delicate details surrounding the flowers and vase all over the canvas. Darkened Sun is a brand new impressionistic painting from my studio and it was an immensely entertaining painting to work on!

When sunflowers are in the dark, they become moon flowers! That is what you said once wasn’t it? It is fascinating – I still remember when you took other people’s photographs and transform them into something new – I remembered how it reminded me of places I went during the day and the night, and how they would feel different at different times – and now you strive for that through your painting. Same painting, but in different rooms it is a new work of art. Very well done – very lovely, narrative and poetic.
