Olifant

Carrie Glenn

Olifant

1: any of a family (Elephantidae, the elephant family) of thickset usually extremely large nearly hairless herbivorous mammals that have a snout elongated into a muscular trunk and two incisors in the upper jaw developed.

Charcoal, graphite and ink on paper.
This is a special commercial project that I worked on for “Premier Press” a local print company here in Oregon. They commissioned me for a special event they were having with an African theme. It ended up being printed on a large banner. it was a great success and fun to create! I kept it simple in form and somewhat modern in the depiction of the design.

“Comrade Rollanz, once sound your olifant!
If Charles hear, where in the pass he stands,
I pledge you now, they’ll turn again, the Franks.”

“Never, by God,” then answers him Rollanz,
“Shall it be said by any living man,
That for pagans I took my horn in hand!
Never by me shall men reproach my clan.
When I am come into the battle grand,
And blows lay on, by hundred, by thousand,
Of Durendal bloodied you’ll see the brand.
    Franks are good men; like vassals brave they’ll stand;
Nay, Spanish men from death have no warrant.”

  • Carrie Glenn replied

Now that’s what I call some real vintage poetry. Did you ever imagine that they were talking about sounding an elephant!!! I mean just to get him to sound you wouldn’t believe what they had to do… (hehe)
    Thanks Vivian!!

Yes, it’s beautiful, I like this kind of poetry, the different way they spoke. It’s a tale of a brave knight.

Oooohh those poor animals, I believe they tickle them behind their ears so much that the elephant will start sounding quite loud, jajajajajajajajaja

  • Carrie Glenn replied

Haha….yes…thats how they did it huh!!!??? (Thanks Vivian!!! ;p)
