The Lovers Ochiyo and Hanberi

Acrylic on canvas, 12”x24”

SOLD $1200

(Study Painting)
This painting is inspired by the heroes of an authentic tragedy which was also dramatized by Chikamatsu in 1722. Hanbei was a greengrocer from Osaka who married Ochiyo, a village beauty. There love was so strong their story became a village legend. Hanbei’s spiteful mother Omine tormented his new wife with scorn and disdain, so much so that the young couple chose to commit suicide, though Ochiyo was with child.
Perhaps they felt their love would live on, in yet another life?

stunning. It looks like a museum piece from the X Dynasty
wowee! Only like only CG can :)

  • Carrie Glenn replied

Hey Kenny! ;D Thaaaanks so much. Yes I really worked hard to get every stroke just right. I really wanted an aged feel or actually more like an ancient feel to it. I also really worked on the lettering, it was really great to work on! It really brought back some of the calligraphy I used to do.
    Thanks buddy!!! ;D

heyy. :) i really like this so i decided to choose this to write about for a project. but i have a question? wat media did u use? watercolors? pencils? paint? etc.

  • Carrie Glenn replied

Hi Candyy…I actually used acrylics…but very watered down….so in a sense it would be the equivalent of watercolors…but for technicalities sake I used acrylics. :D Thank you for you interest and I am honored that you would write about my work!! Let me know if you have any other questions? Take care!!! xoxo ;-)

loll.uhh.wats acrylics? n u deserve it :) its really nice n how u didd it by the inspriatoin of the legend. oh n btw, is “Chikamatsu” a kind of ppl? or a place..

  • Carrie Glenn replied

Chikamatsu Monzaemon is a person (real name was Sugimori Nobumori) he was a Japanese dramatist of jōruri, the form of puppet theater that became known as bunraku. Chikamatsu is known as the “Japanese Shakespeare” for his assortment of plays staged by puppets in the early days of bunraku stage plays and for the greatest of his work.
