milky waters
Shooting along Tremont, we Finally have some water in our rivers, due to a very nice rain season for the year, definitely beats last year of 2007’s drought.
I was playing around with shutterspeed on this showing a new photographer friend of mine from Ohio what the different settings produce. I am trying to get Lou here on the bubble, I didnt warn him about the addiction tho :)
Great thing about digital, we can experiment all we want, and just delete if we dont like. So I am always up for experimenting, especially when my subject isnt taking off in the woods.
I shot this in shutterspeed priority
SS set at 1/4th of a second
F-stop at F29
ISO at 100
Focal length at 187mm
Exposure Comp at -0.3

Love the look of the fast flowing water. You captured it perfectly! Now was this with or without a tripod .. hehe … Just kidding and NO, I have not gotten one yet. Soon. In 2009 anyway!
Christopher E... replied
lol judy when you get to a shutterspeed that low, you MUST use a tripod, and why dont you have one yet?? hmm..were you not good to santa?? get one! :) thanks..lol

Hehe … Santa is the guy in red right? Guess he lost my wish list! I didn’t get Brad Pitt either! Oh well, I hear Walmart has them very inexpensive too! I might just shuttle on over there in a few weeks when the crowds have died down.
Christopher E... replied
judi that walmart one works just fine! i use one with a canon rebel xt on it, no problems, so they are worth the money

WOW!! what a superb shot…Love it!!

Well, you’ve got THIS technique figured out nicely. :-) What’s so superb about it is the composition. California is still in that drought and chances to get a shot like this are few so making the most of every chance is crucial. It really looks like you got the most out of this composition and, if I’m not mistaken, just missing the glare from the water at the bottom of the shot. Whether you did that with careful aim or cropping, you did one sweet job!
1/4 isn’t too slow to require a tripod but did you use one anyway? And if you use the settings the camera gives you for shutter priority, go full manual and really close down the aperture, this location at 1 or 2 seconds would give you the shot I’m longing to get, when the ‘milk’ turns to ‘silk’. I’m jealous as all get out but it took a thinking photographer to get something this nice even if the location is perfect. ”...playing around with shutterspeed…” my BUTT! :-D
Lenny La Rue, IPA
Oops! My bad and didn’t read that you DID use a tripod. I go “gonzo” sometimes and use the rocks, logs, or creatures in full rigor mortis to steady the camera up to 2 seconds. Of course, I fell off a cliff doing that and got wet countless times but hey, it’s all about getting the shot, right? LOL!
