digging for termites
last sunday was in cades cove in the great smoky mountains. came upon a bear jam (everyone stops in middle of road and gets out of car to check out bear!)
this Huge mama was with one of her cubs, along side the road
she found this stump, and didnt really care we all were fairly close, she was after the termites.
unfortunately for her, she has been tagged twice, due to humans causing her to react. if she goes after another and the park finds out…they will kill her.
its time the humans are held accountable for their actions towards these animals, after all we are in Their Home, not our’s.
as much as i hated to do it, i did have to lighten this up some due to some dense woods and a cloudy day, im still sick about it! lol

Outstanding capture, and I agree with you about it being their home. We have a few of them that migrate through here and you can bet I am not going to chase one.
Sheryl Kasper
He’s so cute Chris.
Gabriele Swans...

Ellen
Beautiful photo Chris ,Years ago we were in the Smoky mountains and we hoped to see a bear but we didnt :).
Jacqueline Baker
Awww i love this one Christopher, this for me is nature at it’s best….not stuck in a zoo (although i do understand the necessity of them) but in natural surroundings where they fare best!!
Glenda Remaklus
Great shot Chris!!!
Anthony Pierce
You know I love this man.
Krys Bailey
A bear jam, rofl! We had Squirrelgate here this morning – so there! ;o) Lovely capture Chris and you’re right, its the bears home and they shouldn’t let the humans inconvenience them.
Bonnie T. Barry
A Louisiana black bear crossed the highway we were traveling on recently, but there was no time for a shot. I’d give my two front teeth for a chance at photographing a beauty like this one, Chris. You did a great job and don’t beat yourself up for adjusting the lighting a bit. Way back when in darkroom days, photographers adjusted things to make their shots better; PS editing is the modern day equivalent. No worries! It does not diminish the photo’s value or appeal! Good work!
Kelly J
WOW!!! Brilliant!!!
Dawne Olson
Beautiful animal! Great capture Chris.
jadeast
We Have several that live in and around our neighborhood without incident, we don’t leave dog food out where they can get it and they occasionally raid the dumpster behind Pizza Hut. I haven’t met anyone who objects to their being here, we live next door to a wildlife preserve that’s only accessible by water. Animals have made much accomodation to living near humans than humans have for animals. We just love it here.
lianne
Fabulous shot Christopher – and just perfect as is! I agree with Bonnie – a little editing increases the appeal here rather than the other way around! I do hope people leave these incredible creatures alone so she isn’t punished for our stupidity! It is, as you said, their home!
PrairieRose
Oh Christopher! I’m green with envy over this shot! This is my dream shot although I would never get out of the car to look at any bear…........So fortunate for you and so well done my Friend…........I hope Mama will now hide deep into the woods out of harm’s way! xo

Darlene Marrya...
First of all Chris don’t be sick about having to lighten this in order to share it, cause if you didn’t, we wouldn’t have seen it, and that would be a loss!
The story you tell of the bear and being tagged is SO sad! I totally agree that people are invading their home and the bear should not be punished for protecting what is theirs! I pray no one does anything stupid to provoke her and that she is able to live in peace!
This is an incredible shot Chris, something I would have never seen if not for you and your wonderful talent with a camera! :)
AnaCBStudio

FANTASTIC SHOT!!!!!! You are correct Christopher, I have often said we need to shot the tourist who upset the bear and not the other way around. By the way, I think I am going to start following you around Cades Cove. LOL I have never gotten a shot of the bears there, seems I am always in the back of the bear jam. LOL
Angel Perry

Chris, a wonderful capture, love your bear shots…:O) even u can benefit from an edit every now andthen…but i so respect your natural take and the expertise it takesto accomplish those shots!
DesImages
This shot is so amazing and unbelievable to me, living in the middle of a city at the other side of the world. That’s one of the great things about this site, that we can interact with people all over the world who experience different things in their lives. Thanks for stopping to get this shot, and for explaining about the tagging. Humans have a lot to answer for.
loramae

I’ve lived in North Idaho for more than 10 years now and the only time I’ve seen a bear was driving through the backwoods of Montana…but the bear and cubs were probably a 100 yards away, LOL…and I live in grizzly bear country, haha!! Anyhoo…fantastic capture!

And who needs Photoshop when they take photos like yours?
Wendella Reeves
This is a great picture, and I know exactly what you mean about a bear jam in the cove. I still don’t understand why people can’t get their picture and move on.
MountainHawk
I have seen a lot of Bears too in the Smokies and getting a great shot is really hard. And getting one without having to photoshop it at least a little is even harder! But I have a better camera now so I am anxiously awaiting their springtime return!
