Saint George and the Dragon by

Pen and ink on parchment.

My study in 1996 of Raphael’s study for Saint George, he did his study in about 1504 pen and ink. I discovered while doing this study that to duplicate his pen strokes he must have been left handed (or that is my belief) biased on doing this study on parchment paper with a dipped quill pen in ink.

Raphael painted two paintings of this subject about the same period. These paintings depicts the best known legend about Saint George which tells of how he slew a dragon with a lance, thus saving the kings daughter, who was being, sacrificed to the monster.
