One morning at my favorite garden I was concentrating on a pink rosebud in the shade when I suddenly became aware of this camouflaged, armored, rather large and prehistoric-looking character clinging to my subject’s stem! He watched me but didn’t budge as I grabbed a few images – and then I ran him off with a twig. I figured he had destruction on his mind, and I meant to save the rosebud. :) (Olympus E-5 & Zuiko 50mm macro, f/7.1, 1/100 sec., ISO 1000, shade, handheld) Texture courtesy of Shadowhouse Creations.

Excellent shot of the rosebud predator!

  • Thank you, Bette! He looked as if he might have been capable of eating the entire rosebush.

Prehistoric is right! Only you could make this guy look rather handsome. I think I’ve seen these things, they’re very very odd looking like some alien from outer space. The light, and your skill!, really brings out the gold tones in this fellow. He really is hanging on there for dear life, isn’t he? He doesn’t know how lucky he is to be in your stream – and look so good!

  • Thanks very much for the wonderful comment and fave, Katherine! I see these huge grasshoppers every once in a while, and they always make my skin crawl. Regardless, I have to attempt a portrait or two. For this one, adding the dark texture helped to emphasize the insect’s coloring (texture was masked away from the face and part of the thorax).
