I’m making a few of my most popular images available as cases for the iPad! Native to Southern California (USA) and Northern Mexico, the Matilija poppy (botanical name in tags) is a spectacular spring sight on hillsides. Individual blooms are as large as 5 inches (13 cm) across, growing on stalks up to 8 feet (2.5 m) tall. They are quite different from the small blooms that most of us equate with wildflowers. Photographed at El Dorado Nature Center in Long Beach, California, USA, a preserve devoted to native plants and trees that are left in their natural state.
