I am always fascinated with fern fronds unfurling, and this graceful branch presented such a wealth of frond goodness! The fern caught my eye in the early stages of a local 24-hour digital photo contest I participated in (15-16 September 2012, “Say Cheese Long Beach,” in which this was one of the winning photos). The contest rules specified no manipulation, but I have since done a little noise reduction for maximum image quality here on RedBubble. This is just beautiful, I adore ferns and like you love the shapes they make. This looks like it has frosted edges.

  • Thanks very much, Karen! You know, these shapes are primeval, as ferns have been on earth for more than 300 million years. I suspect these shapes speak to something in us that we don’t even understand. I like your description of “frosted edges” for the way the backlight brought out the hairs.

I find them fascinating as well . .the detail and delicacy is lovely but the strength contained in those delicate little leaves is amazing. A beautiful study . . .x

  • Thanks so much, Teresa! This one called to me and insisted I climb into the plant bed to capture it. :)
