I captured this dramatic sunset during one of the most amazing and constantly changing sky displays I have ever witnessed. I was on top of Signal Hill (California, USA), which has a 360-degree view including Los Angeles to the north and Long Beach to the south. This view is west toward Palos Verdes Peninsula (the gentle hill), San Pedro and Wilmington (you may be able to make out part of the ConocoPhillips Wilmington refinery at the lower right). The lights come from San Pedro and Wilmington (communities near the Port of Los Angeles, which adjoins the Port of Long Beach.) This is a semi-panoramic crop, not a true multi-shot pano. (Olympus E-510 & Zuiko 40-150mm zoom at 84mm, f/5, 1/250 sec., ISO 400, partly cloudy, monopod)

What a beautiful sunset Celeste and so dramatic. Love how you captured the lights just staring to take effect, below. Well done.

When I saw the thumbnail, I thought it was going to be a bushfire photo! Those are all fire colours – even the grey clouds and black hill! Aptly named.

  • Thank you, Bette! Although we call them brush fires, we also get big fires here sometimes, and they always affect the sunset skies in dramatic ways. This was just a normal day with some clouds, however, and no fires in the area, which made this sunset all the more remarkable.
