I am posting a series of photos to highlight my experience and ability at capturing musicians in performance. I had the pleasure of meeting and photographing the Dixiedelics, a Southern California band that plays both historic and contemporary music in classic Dixieland jazz style, at an outdoor concert in Long Beach. If you live in Southern California or are visiting, you can enjoy the Dixiedelics at Steamers Jazz Cafe and also Bourbon Street Restaurant (both in Fullerton). (Olympus E-510 & Zuiko 70-300mm zoom at 300mm [600mm equivalent in full-frame 35mm], f/4, 1/320 sec., ISO 100, afternoon sun, handheld)

It’s obvious that you enjoyed your assignment! I like this one best – for its content, colour and composition.

  • Thanks very much, Bette! Although I liked the entire band, I admit to being partial to Jerry because he has such a photogenic face.

  • Thanks again, Kristi! The passion was definitely there, and I find it very easy to get caught up in that when I’m photographing musicians.
