This old-fashioned cluster of roses caught the attention of my nose even before I saw the flowers! I had been exploring the rose garden that’s part of the grounds of the 1865 Queen Anne Cottage (built by the owner of Santa Anita Racetrack) at the Los Angeles County Arboretum when the sweet scent beckoned. This is actually a relatively modern rose, bred by Kleine Lettunich of San Diego, California, from “Frances E. Lester” and named both for her daughter and the song from The Music Man (which is spelled “Lida Rose”). Isn’t it charming?
