This old-fashioned cluster of roses caught the attention of my nose even before I saw the flowers! I had been exploring the rose garden that’s part of the grounds of the 1865 Queen Anne Cottage (built by the owner of Santa Anita Racetrack) at the Los Angeles County Arboretum when the sweet scent beckoned. This is actually a relatively modern rose, bred by Kleine Lettunich of San Diego, California, from “Frances E. Lester” and named both for her daughter and the song from The Music Man (which is spelled “Lida Rose”). Isn’t it charming? Beautiful capture and cluster. Love the middles of these roses.

  • Thank you, Joy! The middles betray the heritage roots of these roses, and I also find them quite lovely.

Absolutely beautiful and charming, Celeste. The brownish background looks very well with the tinged-pink roses. What a lot of information you give! I feel a (little) bit guilty that I don’t do similarly.

  • Bette, thank you very much for the great comment! I don’t always give this much information, but this rose had an interesting story behind it.
