Without looking at the tags, you may find it difficult to identify the subject of this macro capture, unless perhaps you’ve walked a beach at daybreak when wind and tide have combined to create fantasy sculptures in the sand. This may appear at first to be a black and white image, but look closer to see some blue edges from the dawn’s early light as well as dark greenish patches left by seaweed. Photographed at Alamitos Beach (Long Beach, California, USA). (Olympus E-300 & Zuiko 35mm macro, f/5.6, 1/200 sec., ISO 400, daybreak, handheld)

This is a wonderful find, love the shapes. How wonderful to walk the beach at day break one way to have a brillant start of the day.

  • Thanks very much, Karen! I was very thrilled at this find and others on a particular morning. I’m very fortunate to live within blocks of the beach.

This is fascinating and quite lovely. The dendritic pattern is reminiscent of an aeriel view of a river delta – and it’s all in miniature!

  • Thank you, Bette! I was fascinated to see how the small patterns resembled larger ones in nature – miracles all.

These shapes created by the sea, wind, and sand are just amazing!!! They look like old, gnarled trees….Fantastic!!

  • The beauty of an abstract is that many things can be seen in it. Gnarled trees, definitely! Thanks for your wonderful comment, Laurie.
