Photographed in a local cooperative garden, this ladybug stood out against a thicket of sunflower leaves. This is a 100% organic garden and home to lots of ladybugs and other good things. (Olympus E-510 & Zuiko 70-300mm zoom at 300mm [600mm in full-frame 35mm equivalent], f/6.3, 1/200 sec., ISO 100, morning sun/open shade, handheld.)

..fabulous, Celeste.. the light on the Ladybug is excellent and, of course, I am always in awe of the sharpness you get…handheld…I learned from you to always always keep an eye on my histogram and, just today, I was out with my 100-300 lens which is not overpoweringly heavy or cumbersome so I decided to give handholding a shot and didn’t bring along my tripod or monopod…trying to learn how to steady myself…how would Celeste do it….

    Excellent photography once again, Celeste.

  • Thank you for your generous compliment, Katherine! I appreciate it very much. As for steadying yourself, there are many techniques, some of them depending on whether you are standing, crouching, etc. Here’s an article by Joe McNally (yes, the famous pro): Here’s another how-to (note especially the crouching technique):

    Great detail and lighting. Beautiful

  • Thank you, Joy! I was fortunate to capture the glorious red-orange against such a dark green.

The orange of the ladybird looks wonderful against the dark, murkey greens.

  • Thanks very much, Bette! The greens are indeed dark, and that was a lucky catch to set the ladybug/ladybird off in all her shiny glory. :)
