Packin' pollen by Celeste Mookherjee

I was ready to leave after a full morning in the botanical garden, but I couldn’t ignore the activity around the aloes. Bees were having a wonderful time harvesting pollen from these Lebombo Aloe blooms (the variety is native to South Africa and Mozambique). I persisted until I captured a bee with one of its pollen sacs in full view. It was noon, so the light was more contrasty than I would have liked; I did a little touch-up of some blown highlights. such incredible macro Celeste, it is just beyond the understanding of the human eye, love the colors, and the light is just honey bee color, which adds juiciness to this incredible photo, I am wowed!

  • You certainly are quick, Angelika! Thanks very much for your wonderful comment and fave. Going beyond what the human eye can see is a lot of the joy of macro. Going through macro photos I’ve downloaded onto my computer is always so much fun!

Gorgeous golden tones. Great clarity and work.

  • Thanks very much, Joy! The bee does seem color-coordinated to the aloe stamens. :)

This is a beauty, Celeste – and fit for a scientific treatise on bees!

  • Thank you, Bette! There was so much bee activity around these aloes that I captured lots of images in a short time. Even so, very few were good, but I consider myself fortunate to come away with even one.

That is one happy bee….I guess he didn’t realize you were there as he was so occupied…fabulous clarity, Celeste..really impressive….I tried to get some macros of bees yesterday but they are all buzzing about and not settling for a second so I decided to play it safe and not bother….

  • Thanks very much, Katherine! There were quite a few bees, and they all were quite intent on gathering pollen. Lots of touch-and-go flight activity is always challenging!

What a wonderful capture – incredible lighting and detail, especially the pollen sac. And the title is perfect!

  • Thanks very much, Anita! I can’t often capture the pollen sacs, so I’m always happy when I can get a sharp bee capture that shows a sac (as it shows so much about bee behavior).

Beautifull work, love to see the bee struggle with the hairs lol. Congrats on your feature!

  • Thanks very much, Nicole! Yes, the bees have a tough time getting a foothold. :)
