Elegant calla against nature's painted backdrop by

I’m taking a brief break from my Catalina photos with this calla lily captured at my local botanical garden against the glorious colors of spring blooms backlit by the morning sun. This is totally natural: no crop, composed in camera, and no manipulation (only slight sharpening of the flower). (Olympus E-5 & Zuiko 70-300mm zoom at 215mm, f/11, 1/320 sec., ISO 500, open shade & morning sun, handheld)

A fabulous “pure” shot! Amazing work! Elegance for sure!

  • Thank you so much, Angie! The light and the background of foliage and flowers really came together for me that morning.

…so lovely, Celeste, and that background is just so perfect against the delicate white of the lily…

  • Thank you very much, Katherine! When I checked my first shot on my view screen, I was really excited at the way everything came together. I then proceeded to take the shot over and over at a variety of f/stops to be REALLY sure of getting it. :)

    Nice backlighting getting the textures.

  • Thanks very much, Eileen! Callas have such wonderful petal texture, but it’s not always easy to get that texture in the white petals. Here I was fortunate that most of the light was indirect.
