Location: town of Avalon, Santa Catalina Island, California, USA. My enjoyable walk to the Avalon Casino (which was named for the Italian meaning of “casino” – a gathering place) was nearly over. Late afternoon light was gorgeous, and I had my wide-angle zoom with me. Of several captures, this was the one I liked best for the way the fence and the palm trees lead the eye to the Art Deco Casino structure. This is not cropped, composed in the camera, and was given only minimal post-processing. (Olympus E-5 & Zuiko 9-18mm zoom at 18mm [36mm in 35mm equivalent], f/6.3, 1/1600 sec., ISO 200, afternoon sun, handheld)

Your wonderful eye is on full display in this beautifully-composed capture, Celeste! I love the way the railing and sidewalk lead the eye to that wonderful Art Deco building, and the blue sky with those soft, wispy clouds form a perfect backdrop!

  • Thank you, Anita! There’s a lot to be said for taking such a walk, as so many angles and possibilities present themselves along the way.

You got such a good eye Celeste for composition. This one is so nicely balanced.

  • Thank you very much, Eby! I came around a bit of a curve in the walkway and immediately saw what was happening with the lines (trees and fence). From there I maneuvered a little until I was happy with the way it all came together. The virtue of being on foot instead of in a vehicle. :)

Looks like a beautiful place! I use to live in LA and never got the chance to visit the Santa Catalina Island…I missed out!! Gorgeous image!

  • Thanks, Kristi! Catalina is so close to LA, and yet it feels a million miles away because the whole atmosphere is so different. Maybe you’ll have another opportunity one day.
