This egret was hanging out by the small waterfall at El Dorado Nature Center (a preserve, not a botanical garden, in Long Beach, California), waiting for small fish to catch. He caught one but I missed the shot because he was SO quick! It was a breezy day, thus the fluttering of some feathers. I was fascinated by his big yellow feet and the way he maneuvered so easily on the wet rocks. (Olympus E-510 & Zuiko 70-300mm zoom at 263mm [526mm in full-frame 35mm equivalent], f/5.6, 1/80 sec., ISO 400, filtered afternoon sun, handheld)

Those Snowy Egrets are beautiful, aren’t they, with those golden feet…we don’t have them right here in Toronto but, a couple of summers ago, one was spotted nearby when we happened all to be out on a birding trip not to far away…we piled into cars with our scopes and gear and went to the spot and spread out…but he reportedly had taken flight…We have Great Egrets though but they don’t have those golden feet….Your photo really speaks to the agility of this fellow too – balancing on that rock as he is…such graceful birds in all way…and so speedy when they target a snack…just a lovely photo, Celeste but what were you doing out of the botanical garden…they must have sent out a search party for you…!

  • Thank you, Katherine! They have a group of these egrets at El Dorado, as well as some herons and lots of other birds. The park has two connected lakes and a lot of land with native trees and plants only. It’s a happy place for the wild creatures that live there and can offer some great photo opportunities in a much wilder setting than the botanical gardens. :)

Love this, Celeste. He (?) looks completely absorbed in what he came to do and is not interested in you! His stillness is offset and magnified by the rushing water.

  • Thank you very much, Bette! I’ve taken many photos of the snowy egrets at this preserve, but this is far and away my favorite for the pose. Although the birds are used to the presence of humans, they usually don’t let people get very close. I had slowly moved from a position behind the bird (on a bridge) to a path along the creek that gave me this view. I think the bird was OK mainly because I was the only person around. Some days the park preserve is crowded, and you can’t get close to any birds then.

What a wonderful capture – I love the pose, especially the way those great yellow feet are anchoring him in that position!

  • Thank you very much, Anita! I was very happy with the pose within the setting, and I’m delighted you like it too!
