Greystone Mansion & Courtyard by Celeste Mookherjee

Currently unavailable for purchase

This is a view of the historic Greystone Mansion (Beverly Hills, California, USA), built 1926-1928 and dedicated as a City park in 1971. Now on the National Register of Historic Places, the mansion was nearly demolished for a subdivision, but the City of Beverly Hills stepped in and saved the building and grounds in 1965. The interior of the mansion is not open to the public, but the exterior and grounds are – and they are very beautiful! You may have seen this place without knowing it, because it is a very popular location for movies, TV shows, and commercials. (Among many movies and TV shows filmed here: There Will Be Blood, The Witches of Eastwick, Dynasty: the Reunion, Ghostbusters II, Murder She Wrote, Spiderman). It’s also a must-see for visitors to the Los Angeles area. Greystone Mansion (also known as Doheny Mansion) is believed by many to be haunted, and special ghost-themed tours are available around Halloween. (Olympus E-510 & Zuiko 9-18mm zoom at 18mm, f/8, 1/320 sec., ISO 100, sunny, handheld)

A wonderful capture of a very interesting place, Celeste. The variety of shapes and textures really draws the eye in!

  • It’s a great place to visit, Anita, even for us locals. On this day I heard multiple languages spoken and several versions of English that were not American. The place is especially popular with international visitors. The shapes and colors you see in the courtyard paving are from restoration work done a few years ago.

All those shapes and lines and texture and detail…a perfect candidate for an image by you, Celeste…so nicely taken…I can see why this is such a popular place for tv and movies to shoot…

  • Thank you, Katherine! You’re seeing only one small part of the place here. It’s quite grand and has a commanding view from its spot in the hills.

Gorgeous setting and photo, Celeste. I would love to see you paint this. It has such a lovely composition, light and shadow.

  • Thank you, Bev! This is so much more detailed a scene than anything I’ve painted, but I can also see why you suggested it. It would also be very good practice for perspective. :)
