Dahlia imperialis 'California Angel' by

I’ve been visiting my local botanical garden for about six years and had somehow never seen anything but pink or light purple tree dahlias. A few days ago I was surprised to see white tree dahlia double blooms WAY above my head. They were so pretty in the morning sun, but I had to pull out my telephoto zoom to show any detail. The background is a mix of blue sky and blurred bare tree trunks (no manipulation). (Olympus E-5 & Zuiko 70-300mm zoom at 86mm, f/5, 1/320 sec., ISO 200, morning sun, handheld)

A snapshot of the tree. To give you a sense of scale, the background building is a garage or storage building about 12 feet (3.66 meters) tall. The closest flowers to the ground (on the right) are about 12 feet up!

The colors are wonderful Celeste…the background is like a soft watercolor painting…..Beautiful..!!

  • Thanks very much, Thomas! The background was a combination of luck and a good f/stop for the distance. :)

Wow, I can’t believe you got this with your telephoto….(I typed telephone for some reason.. that would be weird but so many people are now using smart phones to take photos…)…. the clarity and detail of those petals is beautiful and they have a lovely translucent quality also….I was picturing you up on a ladder as I looked at the shot below…

  • My telephoto has some macro capability, and that comes in handy when I can’t get physically close (definitely the case here!). Thank you, Katherine!

A beautiful shot . . and the colour of the background is so beautiful and sets off the delicacy of the flower so well . .x

  • Sorry to be so late responding, but I seem to have missed this comment of yours! It was such a beautiful morning with that blue sky. I was really glad I had my long lens with me so that I could frame a flower against the sky. Thank you!
