One particular morning, I had about 15 minutes of spare time before I had to leave for an appointment. I looked at the angle of the sun and immediately thought of the morning shadows cast by cactus plants on a wildly colorful exterior stucco wall of the Museum of Latin American Art (known locally as MOLAA). It’s a mere 5 blocks from where I live and thus a good choice for a limited window of time. Here’s what I have to show for my 15 minutes. :) (Long Beach, California, USA) (Olympus E-510 & Zuiko 9-18mm zoom at 17mm, f/5.6, 1/320 sec., ISO 100, mid-morning sun, handheld)

WOW! Very bright image Celeste. Great shot, even though I don’t like pink ;)
Thanks, Elizabeth! You remind me of myself some years ago, when I would happily have proclaimed that I didn’t like pink. Mostly that was because I couldn’t wear certain shades of pink without my skin looking sallow (which is still true). Spending countless hours photographing flowers has given me a new appreciation of pink. :)

.. I do like pink and I think this is fabulous…you really think like a photographer…no surprise there but so many of us would avoid harsh shadows like this and you come up with this…you can even see the texture on the pink stucco and that green of the cactus is as vivid as can be ..but no blown out highlights for you….the contrast of these two bright colors is really nice to see on a dull, grey and rainy morning here in Toronto..but they just pointed out on the news that, at 11 degrees (Celsius), we are warmer than L.A. at 9 degrees…. but not for long with below freezing expected over the next few days.
Thanks very much, Katherine! This one was a lot of fun, as I had visited the museum enough times to have an idea of how the light would interact with plantings and building (and you can tell the architect designed with sun and shadows in mind). We’ve had some cloudy and cold weather, it’s true (and rain the other day).
