Lake Shrine windmill by Celeste Mookherjee

This reproduction of a 16th-century Dutch windmill is a chapel on the grounds of the Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine in Pacific Palisades, California. It’s a very beautiful and peaceful place to spend a few hours, whether to read a book (as many were doing), feed the koi and birds in the lake (and perhaps have a swan nibble on your toe, as happened to me), or just walk around and find lovely photo opportunities. This image has been processed to emulate opalotype, a 19th-century process of printing a monochromatic photograph on milky, translucent glass. (Olympus E-510 & Zuiko 50mm macro, f/6.3, 1/1000 sec., ISO 100, afternoon sun, handheld).

I love this effect Celeste . . .it’s the first time I’ve seen it and is perfect for the subject . . .lovely

  • Thank you, Teresa! I’m glad you like the effect, as I also thought it was a good fit for the subject. It’s one of the many creative possibilities in the latest Topaz filter, B&W Effects.

Beautiful effect, Celeste. love these old images. In Europe I was able to see a lot of them and always impressed me the technique and the clarity of all images.

  • Thanks, Eby. Once I tried various monochrome treatments on this, I found I liked them much better than the original in color.
