Wandering near the cactus garden at my local botanical garden, I spotted flashes of pure white that were not there the week before. It turned out that I was very fortunate to witness the first day of bloom for these Golden Torch cacti (columns are about 5 to 8 feet tall). They are native to western Argentina and Bolivia. (Zuiko 70-300mm zoom at 100mm, f/8, 1/1600 sec., ISO 200, bright morning sun, handheld)

Exquisite little flowers. but perhaps not so little? Adding them to my Favourites.

  • You guessed correctly, as these are quite large flowers. The cactus columns on this mature cluster are roughly 7 feet tall, the fully open flowers about 10 inches in diameter. Thank you for your great comment and fave!
