It was overcast with a hint of mist in the air as I headed for my local botanical garden this morning. Before a bit of sun started to burn through, I managed a good hour and a half of shooting with the advantage of a giant soft box in the sky providing beautiful light. Of course I spent a lot of time with the dahlias, and I got very lucky when I found this gorgeous hoverfly perched on the tip of a dahlia petal. The soft light was just right to bring out the iridescence of its wings. (Olympus E-5 & Zuiko 50m macro, f/11, 1/100 sec., ISO 1250, overcast, handheld)

Oh my gosh, look at the patterns, colors and stripes on this little guy! Incredible clarity and focus Celeste!

  • Thank you, Joanne. Hoverflies are quite pretty, although it’s hard to see this much detail with the naked eye (one of the reasons I love macro photography). They are beneficial, too – pollinators.
