Rice flower tapestry by Celeste Mookherjee

I captured these delicate pink buds recently at my local botanic garden. These are pink rice flowers (botanical name in the tags), native to Australia and layered with a texture of my own making, created from a capture of the later strawflower-like bloom stage on the same plant. (Olympus E-5 & Zuiko 70-300mm zoom at 226mm in macro range, f/5.6, 1/250 sec., ISO 500, open shade, handheld)

Love the pastel colours and that gorgeous texture which complements the flower so beautifully.

  • Thanks, Maggie! It was a last-minute inspiration to try that texture. I used a layer mask. :)

Oh LOL! I’ve just had another practice at layer masks – the painting bit is defeating me!

  • Two things about painting on a mask: use a VERY soft-edged brush, and keep the opacity of your “paint” low (maybe 50% or less). This allows you to work with subtlety, hiding or revealing things in steps (multiple brush strokes).
