I saw a profusion of white trumpet flowers shortly after entering the Los Angeles County Arboretum. From the flower shape, I thought they were angel’s trumpets (Brugmansia) – until I looked inside the trumpet and saw a very different structure from that of any Brugmansia. Fortunately there was a sign and I learned this was a Nepal trumpet flower (botanical name in the tags). (Olympus E-5 & Zuiko 50mm macro, f/6.3, 1/160 sec., ISO 200, open shade, handheld)

Amazing complexities that go on inside a flower. Lovely detailed capture of the centre, and a beautiful silk-like sheen on the petals.

  • Thank you, Maggie. Yes, the heart of a flower can be a very complex place. That’s what made me capture this image.

I always marvel at your shooting angle, Celeste. I almost imagine you morphing into a tiny little wee you and climbing high up inside a flower .. up along side those sharp-edged petals, hanging on for dear life!… no tripod, just little tiny you and your camera…Then, upon completion, down those silky petals you slide with a “thud” as your feet land back on solid ground and once again you are …Celeste….

Seriously, the composition of this is truly amazing… As Maggie has pointed out, the complexities of the inner beauty of this trumpet flower have been expertly captured by you… Plus, the color – white is no issue for you – is just so perfect and carries with it all that texture and that bit of a sheen…

    Fave!
