The popular name of this flower, Pride of Madeira, is based on its being native to the island of Madeira. It apparently grows well in many parts of the world, even to the point of being considered an invasive pest in some places. Bees and butterflies love it. In fact you can see the shape and color of a bee in the bokeh in the lower right.

I see the bee! This was made to be photographed by you, Celeste.. Lovely, striking color and all those angles and points just waiting for that perfect focus / depth of field…

  • Thanks, Katherine. The color combination really is special and what first attracted me to these flowers a couple of years ago (before I knew their name).

Beautifully captured and great colours. The length of the complete flower head is quite long. Love the contrast of the pink and blue.

  • Many thanks, Joy! The pink color seems to show up only during a certain stage of these flowers’ growth. The stamens typically turn paler as the flower ages.
