Downtown Los Angeles from Signal Hill by

After a storm it’s often possible to see great distances from the hilltop park at Signal Hill, a California town that occupies a large hill entirely surrounded by Long Beach. The view here is north to downtown Los Angeles (about eighteen miles away) and beyond. It was so clear on this day that you can even see the Griffith Observatory (left of the high-rise buildings and built into the mountainside, an additional six miles distant). The commercial jet near the top of the frame was not added in Photoshop; the Long Beach Airport is just out of view to the right. (Olympus E-300 & Zuiko 40-150mm kit lens at 150mm, f/4.5, 1/200 sec, ISO 100, late afternoon sun after a storm, handheld; RAW image processed in Photoshop CS6 with Levels and Curves adjustment layers to cut through distant haze and bring out details; further fine-tuning of details and color balance via Topaz Clarity, Detail and ReStyle on separate layers at reduced opacity)

Very nice soft tones to this

  • Thank you very much, Kala. The light was special that afternoon and had a lot to do with the way the tones came out.

This is simply a fabulous cityscape scene, Celeste.. so many wonderful elements coming together perfectly.. a beautiful capture !

  • Thanks very much for that wonderful endorsement. :) The photo is a few years old, and I decided to start over with processing because the earlier version was nice but bland. The information was there in the RAW file, but my processing skills weren’t up to the challenge. It can be quite an eye-opener to go back to an old file and try again with newer skills.

    Wonderful light and work.

  • Thank you very much, Joy. This is a complete rework of an older image, and I’m a lot happier with the end result this time. :)

Great view, Celeste – and it gives one some idea of your environment!

  • Thanks very much, Bette! My environment is actually 180 degrees from this view, the south part of Long Beach that borders the Pacific and the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Maybe I should go back and process that view as well. I made a lot of photos that afternoon. :)

Fabulous capture I am so blessed to live here in L.A.

  • Thanks very much, Renate! I feel the same way about living in Long Beach.

On a clear day I see, excellent image Celeste, I haven’t seen LA with this POV!

  • Many thanks, Larry! Yes, a clear day, as the rain had washed the air. :) This POV is unique, and I was excited to discover it when I first visited the Signal Hill hilltop park quite a few years ago. The park commands a 360-degree view and is popular with picnickers and photographers in particular.

What a wonderful cityscape, Celeste! Wonderful clouds, lighting and detail on this amazing view!

  • Thank you, Anita! It was a perfect afternoon because the rain had washed the air clean. You could literally see for miles. In the opposite direction, Catalina Island was very clearly visible, and that’s 20+ miles away.
