Although I don’t like to see wild creatures captured or caged, I was torn when I encountered this tiger because I so admire the beauty of all cats, large and small. This white tiger at the Mirage in Las Vegas (Nevada, USA) was much too beautiful to ignore as he met my gaze, and so here he is, a rare and endangered creature in the wild but well cared for in captivity. I pass no judgement on his current state but only share his beauty. (Olympus E-510 & Zuiko 70-300mm zoom at 263mm [527mm in full-frame 35mm equivalent], f/5.6, 1/200 sec., ISO 200, interior lighting, handheld)

The white tiger is a subspecies of Bengal tiger. All tiger subspecies put together currently amount to around 3,200 endangered tigers remaining in the wild. The main reasons tigers are endangered – in most cases, critically endangered – are illegal hunting for their pelts, meat and body parts (used in folk medicines) as well as habitat loss that results from logging and other forms of forest destruction. I feel as you do about these creatures being caged; however, their beauty still captivates and is to be admired and you have conveyed the magnificence of this fellow so well with his detailed markings and gorgeous eyes! . . . and that is one large paw . . .

  • Thanks very much, Katherine! This was one VERY large tiger, as you can tell from the paw. I was quite captivated. :)

I am with you on this Celeste….this is truly a wonderful image to treasure….. you made contact on a very deep level with this magnificent tiger……..x

  • Thank you, Ellanita! There were several tigers present, but this is the only one that seemed aware of me (which was so special!).

I share your feelings about caged animals. This one looks as if he is remembering grasslands of days gone by. You have made a beautiful study of him, Celeste – it’s perfect!

  • Thank you so much for your appreciation of this portrait, Bette!
