Red buckwheat (Eriogonum grande rubescens) is a California native, a rare perennial herb that originates in the Channel Islands off the coast, where it typically grows with chaparral and coastal sage scrub. I photographed these flowers at Madrona Marsh Preserve (Torrance, California), the last remaining vernal marsh in Los Angeles County.

Red buckwheat is a low-growing shrub with gray-green oval leaves on prostrate branches, about one foot high and three feet wide. The red to pink flowers bloom from June to October and are very attractive to butterflies. Various Native American tribes used parts of the plant in a variety of ways, including as a cathartic, an eyewash, and to ease pain associated with rheumatic joints, menstruation, childbirth and other conditions. A lovely study of this obviously very useful herb. Is it used in any way in the general population? Bush remedies and food used by the Australian Aborigines are becoming more and more popular here.

  • Thanks very much for the thoughtful comment. I’m not aware of any general use of this plant, medicinal or otherwise, but there other plants with “buckwheat” in the name (but unrelated) that are used for food. I’m aware of some of the Aboriginal foods and some herbs. I have a few herb mixes from an Aboriginal company, sent to me by my sister.
