Mama Unngani and baby by Celeste Mookherjee

From the San Diego Zoo Safari Park a few years ago: Mama Unngani and her baby girl (just 42 hours old and 209 pounds). I had never seen such a young baby elephant, so this encounter was quite special. Although mama and baby are obviously within an enclosure here, it is a kind of maternity ward. Elephants and many other animals at this 1800-acre (730 ha) park roam more or less freely within natural settings. The park is also home to wildlife conservation programs, including one that was a major factor in the recovery of the endangered California Condor. (Olympus E-300 & Zuiko 40-150mm zoom at 84mm, f/4, 1/200 sec, ISO 100, late afternoon sun, handheld)

For me Celeste there is nothing more touching than the protective love of a mother for her child. This is simply beautiful…..

  • Thank you so much, Sharon! Yes, I could feel that protective love when I saw these two.

Beautiful image Celeste…..I think Mama has her eye on you…..

  • Thanks very much, Thomas! It was such a treat seeing this pair so soon after the little one was born. Mama was watching a whole group of people gathered on a walkway to see her and her calf.

What a beautiful portrait of mother and child – lighting and detail are just wonderful!

  • Thank you very much, Anita! I took many photos of this pair, and the baby was at least partially hidden in most of them.

Lovely image. This baby really does look small and babyish! Must be because it is so young.

  • Thank you for the wonderful comment, Bette. The baby is not really so small at 209 pounds, but she certainly is when compared to her mother.

Celeste, a really fabulous image. I have a fascination with elephants and am a frequent contributor to The Elephant Sanctuary. I hope you don’t mind a shameless plug for a favorite charity.
