Artist's Description

While photographing a very old ginkgo tree on the grounds of historic Rancho Los Cerritos (Long Beach, California), I saw a blur of red-orange at the edge of my field of vision. Look what a vibrant beauty I found hiding in the shade! This is a Hibiscus schizopetalus, native to tropical eastern Africa in Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique. (Olympus E-510 & Zuiko 50mm macro, f/7.1, 1/60 sec., ISO 400, open shade, handheld)
