A beautiful tern in flight at Bolsa Chica Preserve (California). This particular tern was doing its best to please the many photographers present, as it would fly away, turn around, and then fly straight at us – again and again! (Olympus E-5 & Zuiko 70-300mm zoom at 169mm, f/6.3, 1/2500 sec., ISO 200, afternoon sun, handheld)

You are not even a bird photographer and you get this winning shot! Great photo of this Tern – they are so interesting to watch as thet twirl and swoop but can be tough to get a shot of, though not for you! Was ths one vocal? The trio that hover over our pond sure are

  • Coming from you, Katherine, that is high praise indeed, and I thank you! The truth is that I shot like crazy that afternoon and threw away lots of files after sorting through them all. I was so enthralled and stayed so long that my arms were actually tired from holding my camera and longest zoom pointed upwards. :) Yes, there was lots of vocalizing.

Such elegance in its pirouette in the blue sky, Celeste… A lovely experience and beautiful result…

  • Thanks, Susan! The terns really are a treat to watch because they are so elegant. This preserve also has lots of other water birds, including herons and egrets. All the birds there have protected nesting areas.

I am not “into” birds as such Celeste ~ but I do love these ones. They appear (in flight at least) an almost metallic colour and take on a shape similar to a jet….
You have captured this one beautifully…. great shot ~ with perfect light and colour!!!!

  • I agree, Sharon. The terns are very sleek and graceful birds. Thanks for the wonderful comment!

I love the sharpness of this . .wonderful just seems to be hovering . .x

  • Thank you so much, Teresa! Parts of their flight are like gliding, and they are wonderful to watch!

I like to see more of your skills, not only flowers but many other subjects. Thank you for sharing.

  • You know flowers are my first love, but you will find many other subjects in my portfolio here, with everything organized in collections. I don’t often photograph birds in flight. It is very challenging and really requires longer lenses than I have. Sometimes I manage pretty well with the zoom lens I used here, but I am generally awed by the huge lenses the serious bird photographers use at a place like Bolsa Chica.

A beautiful capture of a most elegant bird, and well worth the effort it took for you to get it (at least I hope it was for you – I hope the tired arms felt better soon after!)

  • Thanks very much, Anita! I agree it was worth the effort, but that afternoon definitely gave me more appreciation of what the real bird photographers do all the time.

Very graceful.. a clean blue background and a perfect light angle.. beautifully captured Celeste!

  • Thank you, Joseph! This little bird was flying pretty high as it approached the photographers arrayed along a footbridge – blue sky was the only background at that point and of course a great way for the bird to show off. :)
