The dahlias at my local botanical garden begin showing their age in autumn. Although they are as beautiful as ever, they are fewer in number and some show less vitality – like this one whose stem couldn’t quite hold the blossom up (the angle is exactly as seen). Funny how this contrary angle looked exactly right to me for this flower, perhaps because I listened to the flower rather than trying to make it look “normal.” It’s true that flowers speak to me, and I have learned so much from them. (Olympus E-510 & Zuiko 50mm macro, f/6.3, 1/60 sec., ISO 400, open shade, handheld; not cropped, minimal processing)

Love the angle also. Gorgeous capture and tones.

  • Thanks very much, Joy! The angle is unconventional, but the flower seemed happy and comfortable. :)

The pink variations look fabulous against the rich greens,

  • I’m glad you like that pink/green contrast, as it’s a big part of why I stepped back from my usual macro stance and captured this combination. Thank you!

Celeste, I’ve little doubt flowers speak to you as you clearly have an bond with them that allows you to see all aspects of their beauty that others of us would not….the tones on this dahlia are just so beautiful and so clear and I like the angle too! This is you at your best and incorporates all of your trademark specialities.

I’ve taken all my images private until I figure out what to do about those two websites Janis alerted us to. I spent hours doing take-down notices only to have them spite me by ripping off other works of mine and it’s only from RB that it’s happening. Really annoys me.

  • Thank you so much for the lovely compliment, Katherine! As for the websites you’re referring to, they have works of mine too (from Flickr as well as here). They are scraper sites, sucking up images in an automated fashion. Unfortunately, most scraper sites are slippery, and they can end up taking way more of our time than it’s worth. I agree that it’s annoying, but I’ve reached a point where I will only devote just so much time to chasing one site.
