I captured this joyful leap of a humpback whale during what turned out to be an extraordinary whale-watching experience aboard the Christopher out of Long Beach, California (Harbor Breeze Cruises – highly recommended if you ever visit Long Beach). As is often the case with this company, we had a naturalist aboard from the Aquarium of the Pacific, providing lots of information about the creatures we encountered. What an afternoon, as we came across a mother humpback whale and her calf traveling and actually playing with dolphins! The naturalist was excited and so were the passengers, as she told us we were seeing behavior that was rare and quite special. Notice the dolphins cavorting at the lower right!
