Colorful! by Celeste Mookherjee

I turned a corner on a sidewalk in Shoreline Village (Long Beach, California, USA) and WHOA, what color! The bright red hydrant pipe and the magenta flowers on a succulent ground cover (ice plant) were sitting near the curb, being ignored by everyone but me – and I couldn’t possibly ignore such wonderfully intense colors! I switched to a long zoom to flatten perspective a bit and had to wait for oblivious pedestrians to stop walking in front of my camera before I finally managed to capture this scene. (Olympus E-510 & Zuiko 70-300mm zoom at 107mm [214mm in full-frame 35mm equivalent], f/6.3, 1/640 sec., ISO 200, early afternoon sun)

Wonderful color indeed Celeste, and I like all the contrasts; hard and soft, cold and warm, natural and manmade, etc.

  • I’m so glad you like it, Richard, and for much the same reasons the scene captured my interest. Thank you!

Brilliant colour indeed! The plants we call ‘pigface’. Nice texture on the red pipe.

  • Thanks very much, Bette! I’ve seen the “pigface” name before – about as odd as “ice plant” when it comes to names. :)

Lovely contrasts! These colors remind me of the Ladies Red Hat Society! They wear red and purple hats when dining out! Cute idea for a capture!

  • Many thanks, Angie! Yes, the colors are reminiscent of the Red Hat Society (we have a branch at our local senior center).
