This is also the cover image for my calendar, Southern California Nautical (photo below is linked to the calendar page):
The calendar images are an exploration of boats, ships, and things nautical in Southern California.
This image started as a photograph (my own) of the main mast (and a little of a furled red sail) of the American Pride, the official tall ship of Long Beach, California. (This is one of a series of images I captured while lying on my back on a structure just a couple of feet above the deck and shooting straight up.) I added a layer for digital brush strokes, a pencil sketch layer created in Topaz Simplify, and then finally mixed all with the original using varied opacities, blending modes and layer masks in Photoshop to achieve a painterly impression. (Olympus E-5 & Zuiko 9-18mm zoom at 18mm [36mm in full-frame 35mm equivalent], f/8, 1/80 sec., ISO 200, late morning sun)
