A Monarch caterpillar munching on milkweed, spotted at my local botanical garden. This is a perfect example of my “always look behind you” habit: I was checking out some yellow hibiscus blooms, turned around and was thrilled to see this little creature feasting on the last of a milkweed plant. (Olympus E-510 & Zuiko 50mm macro, f/6.3, 1/125 sec., ISO 400, overcast, handheld.)

I’ve never seen a caterpillar with such warpaint-like markings! It looks wonderful with the orange flowers.

  • I find Monarch caterpillars to be very attractive with their bright markings, and here you see it feeding on its designated host plant. Of course the botanical garden has host plants for many kinds of butterflies and their caterpillars.

  • Thanks very much, Maisie! The Monarch caterpillars are beautiful creatures, and I was so fortunate to capture a couple of images before it became frightened of my lens.
