I started this painting early 2007, and get cranky with it, so I put it away, then get it back out, do a bit more, get cranky again so put it away…….. and have reapeated this for so long now I don’t know that I’ll ever be happy with it. I think I’d like to start it again, I don’t really know if this one will work for me anymore – I think its hit the point of no return. My husband hassels me about it, I’m thinking I might give it to him to finish and start another, but then maybe I need to finish this for myself (now I’m just babbling – see what this painitng is doing to me……)
i think that you should finish this, it will teach you a lot about your perception of yourself, and the way you paint. Its a great piece of art, and certainly worthy of placing in the public domain. I like it…. The next one would be so different anyway.:>)
Thankyou Linda, I see what you’re saying. Self portraits are so confronting and silly me tends to drag this one out when I’m not feeling so wonderful about myself. Your comment means a lot!
I’m not sure what else you could do to it .. rustle up her hair a bit? more texture in the background? LOL how would i know, i couldn’t paint a wall LOL (o.k, maybe i could) but i’m certainly not an artist of your level .. so i’ll just say i think this is really fabulous and i love it :)
I totally agree about the hair! That’s one of the parts I get frustrated with…. my level of art is not higher or better than yours, its just different – I can’t write like you do! so to me your comment/opinion is as important as the next! Thankyou for taking the time to write something! xxx
I must admit I like how the right eye really comes forward from the use of pink as a highlight. Have you tried cropping out the left edge, like taking it right to the hair maybe? You could check out Brett Whiteley, he did things similar to this. It’s really changed from when I last saw it, it is looking good, I don’t think you should give up. Remember take control, but don’t be too mean to it :P :D
Remember take control, but don’t be too mean to it that’s priceless! Thankyou junior alpha for your advise, its very good!
mm, I quite like the idea of the underlighting on the large eye, maybe you could expand on this to the smaller side of the face, kinda like what Mr Degas did with his ’cafe concert ’ series… just a thought.
ok, so I wasn’t familiar with the ‘cafe concert’ series of Edgar’s so I googled it, and I see what you mean, so I’ll have a play. Thankyou for the advise Micheal =)
Keep going…sometimes the best paintings are the ones you grapple with…Sometimes it takes me a year or so to finish a painting. I think this is artistic and intriguing…keep going my friend….
Wow a year or so…. this is the first painting I’ve wrestled with for this long and its driving me crazy…. I’m not the worlds most patient artist, but I guess it won’t hurt to aquire some (or at least try) =) Thankyou for your kind words Anthea xxx
I think its definately one of those paintings that you will keep going back to, then suddenly out of the blue you will have an aha moment and you will know what it needs… :)

I see a lot of your art,,, as a self portrait!
funny that, I do my best to make my art an expression from my soul…. so I’m glad a perfect stranger can see that =)
