This is part one of a diptych (I havn’t finished its twin yet so stay tuned) for a tafe assignment. We had to pick an object and abstract it through drawing then paint our abstraction. I chose a swiss army knife as a way to try and make a statement against violence. In the news at the time (all the time) there are people being killed or tortured “for what?” I ask. It leads me to see that there are too many out there who forget basic human emotions of kindness, love, compassion and are replacing them with violence. I think its really sad!
Wow I haven’t seen this outcome… great job, the lines work well with it.
yeah – I brought it home to mount it and it was bugging me – it didn’t have the “wow” factor, so I decided to pull the canvas strips apart and leave gaps of red to bring the red in the painting out…… if that makes sence….. anyway I’m much happier with them now! I still havn’t finished the other yet…..
great work CDrew … cool to hear of tafe assignments .. when i do an abstract it sort of comes from nothing …. but i really like the idea you came up with and the statement .. great work!!!!
Thankyou Damien, it was hard for me to paint something violent – my mood got a little aggitated at times – I’m glad it’s over, I much prefer to paint happy feelings =)

what a great choice, a swiss army knife whic is full of all these great shapes and you’ve used them so well. great painting.
Thankyou Marion – that was the reason for the choice of object once I had my concept, a plain old knife didn’t have enough visually for me =)
