City Soul Forever - Melbourne Stencil art on canvas by

Melbourne city street art style painting on canvas – This was my first experiment with stencil art on canvas. And the first time I have ever used some spraypaint.

I created stencils from two of my photos and cut them out. One of a street sign on a telegraph pole and another of the skyscrapers on the skyline. Also used a cutout stencil of circles which reminded me of brickwork.

On the canvas I painted a layer of acrylic mixed with gel medium, then once dry I wrote in paint pen some words I felt conveyed the atmosphere of the Melbourne laneways I love.

Then I coated it with another layer of acrylic and finally spray-painted the stencils in black. I also sprayed a bit of red and white spraypaint freehand in a couple of spots. Once dry I used a matt spray varnish to protect the canvas

Things to learn from:

Although I like the way this turned out I think it could be better, I don’t like the glossyness of the acrylic in some thicker spots and the red spraypaint was also too glossy and which I ended up painting over some of as it was too distracting.

Next time I will skip the gel medium so the acrylics are not so glossy. I also found the spray varnish really darkened the colours so I will try a waterbased light gloss one next time.

I like this… it makes me feel the way I do when I go into the chaos of the city … I like the stencil work …. there is a grafitti/stencil street artist around Mullum whose works have a similar aesthetic … I have been capturing their on camera …

  • thanks for your comments Lisa. Shame I can’t head out to Mullumbimby to see if I can catch a glimpse of their work. Bit too far!!
Maybe you could post some of the pics you have been taking here on redbubble.

You have some very interesting work in your portfolio. The spirals are the first things that jumped out at me but I will have to take time to have a look around your excellent work.

I dont care HOW you did this… I just know that I am envious that I cant do something like this!

  • I believe you could, it really is just stencilling and cutting a design out. Time consuming but much easier than I thought it would be.
